I heard Bernell speak on just two occasions but was profoundly impressed not only by what he said but by his obvious integrity and force of character. He was a man who I would have liked to have know better. I can see from the tributes that have poured in from those UW friends who knew him best that my judgement of him was, if anything, an underestimation.
